Griffin Canning’s turnaround this spring

Griffin Canning, a 28-year-old right-handed pitcher, joined the New York Mets on a one-year, $4.25 million contract in December 2024. Previously with the Los Angeles Angels, Canning held a career record of 25-34 with a 4.78 ERA over 99 games (94 starts). In the 2024 season, he posted a 6-13 record and a 5.19 ERA in 32 games (31 starts), leading the American League in earned runs with 99.

During the Mets’ 2025 Spring Training, Canning showcased significant improvement. Over four appearances (three starts), he compiled a 2-1 record with a 1.88 ERA, striking out 22 batters across 14 1/3 innings.  In his final spring outing against the Miami Marlins, Canning pitched 4 1/3 innings, allowing two runs, recording six strikeouts, and issuing three walks over 83 pitches.

A key factor in Canning’s spring success was his increased reliance on the slider. He threw it 45% of the time, a notable rise from the 24% usage rate in 2024. This strategic shift contributed to higher strikeout rates and overall effectiveness on the mound.

Impressed by his performance, Mets manager Carlos Mendoza named Canning the starter for the third game of the regular season against the Houston Astros. The Mets’ rotation will feature Clay Holmes on Opening Day, followed by Tylor Megill, Canning, David Peterson, and Kodai Senga.

Canning’s resurgence during Spring Training has bolstered the Mets’ starting rotation, especially considering injuries to key pitchers Sean Manaea and Frankie Montas. His revitalized approach and effective use of the slider position him as a valuable asset for the team’s pitching staff in the upcoming season.
