New York Mets catcher Francisco Álvarez is set to miss 6-8 weeks after undergoing surgery to repair a fractured hamate bone in his left hand. The injury occurred during live at-bats on Saturday, as reported by manager Carlos Mendoza.
This marks the second consecutive season Álvarez has faced an early-season injury to his left hand. In April 2024, he suffered a torn thumb ligament that required surgery, sidelining him for over seven weeks. Upon his return in mid-June, Álvarez posted a .237/.311/.411 slash line with 10 home runs over 283 plate appearances.

Considered one of baseball’s top prospects during his time in the Mets’ farm system, the 23-year-old Álvarez has recorded a 99 wRC+ over 779 career MLB plate appearances, indicating league-average offensive production. Defensively, Statcast metrics have rated his framing skills as above average, though his blocking received lower marks in 2024.
With Álvarez sidelined, the Mets will rely on Luis Torrens as their primary catcher. The team may also explore additional catching options to bolster depth during Álvarez’s absence.
