Alonso Homers, Mets Shut Out Jays in Home Opener

In their 2025 home opener at Citi Field, the New York Mets secured a 5-0 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays, delighting a sellout crowd of 43,945. The game began with Francisco Lindor doubling on the first pitch from Kevin Gausman. Following this, Pete Alonso, who re-signed with the Mets on a two-year, $54 million deal during the offseason, launched a two-run homer over the right-field fence, providing an early lead and earning a curtain call from the enthusiastic fans.

Starting pitcher Tylor Megill delivered an impressive performance, allowing just two hits and three walks while striking out four over 5 1/3 innings. His efforts were complemented by the bullpen, with Reed Garrett, A.J. Minter, and Max Kranick combining to complete the shutout. Garrett notably entered in the sixth inning with two runners on base and struck out consecutive batters to escape the jam.

The Mets’ offense extended their lead in the sixth inning. Juan Soto, making his home debut after signing a 15-year, $765 million contract, contributed an RBI double for his first hit at Citi Field as a Met. Brandon Nimmo followed with another RBI double, and Starling Marte added a sacrifice fly, bringing the score to 5-0.

On the Blue Jays’ side, George Springer and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. each recorded two hits, but the team was unable to capitalize on these opportunities. Kevin Gausman took the loss, yielding three runs on two hits and two walks over 5 1/3 innings, notably without recording a strikeout—a rarity in his career.

This win improved the Mets’ all-time home opener record to 42-22 and marked their fifth home-opening victory in the past six years. The game not only highlighted Alonso’s continued impact but also showcased the promising contributions of newcomers like Soto, setting an optimistic tone for the Mets’ season ahead.
