Mets beat Astros 3-1 (3/29/2025)

The New York Mets notched their first win of the 2025 season on Friday night, defeating the Houston Astros 3-1 at Daikin Park. It was a well-rounded performance by the Mets, fueled by timely hitting, a strong outing from starter Tylor Megill, and a shutdown effort from the bullpen. The victory evened the season-opening series at one game apiece and gave fans a hopeful glimpse of what the newly revamped Mets roster is capable of.
The scoring got underway in the second inning when Brandon Nimmo reached base and then stole second. He was driven in by a Mark Vientos double followed by a Jesse Winker sharp RBI single, giving the Mets an early 2-0 cushion. The highlight of the night, though, came one inning later. In just his second regular-season game in a Mets uniform, Juan Soto crushed a towering solo home run to right field—his first as a Met—off Astros starter Hunter Brown. The blast pushed the lead to 3-0 and provided a clear reminder of the power and presence Soto brings to this lineup.
Tylor Megill was sharp in his season debut. He tossed five-plus innings, allowing just one run on three hits while striking out six and walking one. The lone blemish on his line came in the fourth inning when Jose Altuve reached base and was brought home on a Yordan Alvarez sacrifice fly. After Megill exited, the Mets’ bullpen slammed the door. Reed Garrett, A.J. Minter, Ryne Stanek, and Edwin Díaz combined to throw 4 innings of scoreless relief, with Díaz locking down the save in the ninth.

Defensively, the Mets were crisp, and one of the most impressive plays of the game came in the eighth inning. With the Astros threatening, Luisangel Acuña made a diving stop at second base on a sharp ground ball from Alvarez, preventing a potential rally and showing off his range and poise. It was a big moment for the rookie filling in for the injured Jeff McNeil.
Overall, it was a clean, confidence-boosting win for the Mets. The combination of Megill’s poise on the mound, Soto’s impact at the plate, and clutch defense gave the team its first victory in 2025. They’ll look to carry that momentum into the series finale tonight in Houston.
