Veteran infielder José Iglesias has agreed to a minor league contract with the San Diego Padres, which includes an invitation to Major League Spring Training per a report from Jon Heyman from the NY Post. If Iglesias secures a spot on the Major League roster, he can earn a base salary of $3 million, with the potential for an additional $1 million in performance incentives.
Iglesias, 35, experienced a career resurgence with the New York Mets in the 2024 season. After joining the team on a minor league deal, he was called up two months into the season and became a pivotal contributor. Over 85 games, Iglesias posted a .337 batting average, complemented by an .830 OPS, four home runs, 16 doubles, 26 RBIs, and 39 runs scored. His performance was instrumental in the Mets’ journey to the National League Championship Series (NLCS).
Beyond his on-field contributions, Iglesias made a cultural impact with his song “OMG,” released under his artist name “Candelita.” The track became an anthem for the Mets, with players celebrating significant moments by displaying an “OMG” sign in the dugout.

Despite his success with the Mets, a reunion for the 2025 season did not materialize. Mets president of baseball operations, David Stearns, indicated that the team aimed to evaluate younger talent and maintain roster flexibility, making a return for Iglesias unlikely. Expressing his disappointment over the lack of communication from the Mets, Iglesias remarked, “It hurts because we started something that definitely isn’t finished yet.”
Iglesias is no stranger to the Padres organization. In 2023, he played 28 games for their Triple-A affiliate in El Paso, registering a .317 batting average with four home runs and 27 RBIs. His familiarity with the organization and consistent offensive production make him a valuable asset as he competes for a spot on the Padres’ Opening Day roster.
Throughout his 12-year Major League career, Iglesias has been celebrated for his defensive prowess and contact-hitting ability. He boasts a career .283 batting average, with 51 home runs and 392 RBIs across stints with seven different teams. His addition provides the Padres with experienced infield depth as they gear up for the upcoming season.
